How to Prepare Matcha Tea

If you haven’t yet tried matcha tea, you are about to be pleasantly surprised.  This healthy tea is packed full of antioxidants, is a natural detoxifier, rich in fibre and needed vitamins.  More recently, it was discovered that matcha tea can boost the metabolism, thereby making it easier to lose weight.  Better yet, matcha tea can taste great.   In order to enjoy all that the beverage has to offer, though, you must know how to properly prepare it.

Method One: The Bamboo Whisk Method

What You Will Need:

  • 2 tsp. Matcha tea
  • Sifter
  • Bamboo whisk
  • 20 oz. hot water
  • Tea bowl

This preparation method is perfect for those moments when you are able to sit down and enjoy a cup of tea with a friend or loved one.  There is something very romantic about preparing the matcha in this way.  You’ll need to bring water to a boil in your tea pot ahead of time, so it is hot but not at boiling temperature when poured into the tea.

Step One:

Pour approximately 2 teaspoons of matcha tea into your small sifter, holding the sifter over the tea bowl.  You may need to use bamboo or a small spoon to ensure all tea makes it through the sifter.

Step Two:

Pour 20 ounces of the hot water (previously boiled) over the tea, and use the bamboo whisk to mix.  Use a quick, back-and-forth motion to create a froth on the tea.

Step Three:

Drink and enjoy.

Method Two: Matcha On the Run Method

What You Will Need:

  • 1 ½ tsp. matcha tea
  • 8 ounces how water
  • Tea cup (or travel mug)

This method is for those who don’t have time to sift and whisk their tea, but would love to take the great taste to go. You will need to boil water in advance.

Step One: Measure matcha tea into the tea cup and then add a few drops of the hot water.  Mix until it forms a paste-like texture.

Step Two: Add remaining water and stir until tea is dissolved.

Step Three: Enjoy!
